Do you know the definition of the « Knowledge management » (KM) ? It is a holistic approach that aims at better learning and more efficiency through the optimal use of knowledge to create value for the organization. » ©ISO 30401 (2018)
Do you understand what it means? No ? I think it is normal since it is maybe no the best way to start. I recommend not entering into Knowledge Management using ISO 30401, but rather using your requests or your problematic.
Let’s simplify the definition. there are of course a lot of definition, presentation, explanation related to KM that you can easily find on Internet but generally, these definitions are (too) complex:
Knowledge Management is a combination of process, action, methodologies, and solutions that allow maintaining, sharing accessibility and development of object-oriented knowledge (KM enablers) (©SI 25006 (2011))
Knowledge Management is the process of capturing, distributing, and effectively using knowledge (Davenport, 1994)
Knowledge management is understanding the importance of knowledge as a Main Asset and Key to Success, therefore handling it wisely, with care and tender (M. Levy)
KM can be divided into 2 main areas : Explicit KM and Implicit KM :
Explicit KM is the knowledge that can be easily recorded in any kind of information object and that is generally subjected to Quality Assurance (ISO 9001 or similar). By a professional use of an Enterprise Portal linked to a Document Management System, the company should be in position to develop products and services and giving the necessary assurance it is correctly designed, produced, operated, maintained, decommissioned. By managing correctly this AQ system, companies can record efficiently data and information needed.
Implicit KM is not really covered by ISO 9001 (except § 7.1.6 and 7.2). It covers all the hidden knowledge iceberg and not valorized by the company. Following P. Drucker, it is the knowledge located within our 2 ears that you can’t manage it but doing nothing is not an option
